When you think of Minnesota, what do you think of? To be completely honest, when I think about Minnesota, I think of the famous Mall of America, the Minnesota Vikings, and lastly, recent Beluga Heights artist Auburn. Other than those three, I’m drawing a blank.
However, after being introduced to rapper Young Rocky’s music, I was able to add one more thing to that list.
Rocky, whose real name is Marckus Shaw, is a native of Minnesota whose goal in life is becoming everybody’s favorite rapper. While that may take years of work, don’t feel bad for him, because to him, “music is [his] life.” For Rocky, music is the only way he can express himself. Rocky was introduced into the music industry in 2009 with his mix tape, “Tha New Kidd On Tha Block.” On it was the single, “Jerkin’ Wit My Backpack,” the same single that went viral and received more than 100,000 downloads. Though Rocky understands that Minnesota isn’t your ideal place for artists to come out of, he believes that there are still some who are worth a listen.
“I think people need to give Minnesota artists a chance,” he said. “There are some good acts here and actually, being from Minnesota is a plus, it’s all new people with good music.” Rocky’s describes his music as “fresh and well-rounded,” and claims that his music is something that everybody can enjoy.
Though Rocky has opened up for top-selling artists such as Waka Flocka and Travis Porter, don’t mistake his success for luck. He believes in working hard but “expecting nothing.” In fact, his inspirations for his music comes solely from “people that work hard and take nothing for granted musically.” When he’s not up to par with his music, he has fellow Minnesota native and Beluga Heights artist, Auburn, to lean on. “Auburn’s like the big homie, the big sis,” he says. “She keeps us motivated and lets us know when we’re not working hard.”

Though he has had extreme success, he knows that there is the constant battle in the music industry to fight “hip-hop is dead.”
“It means I have a job to do,” he says. But between J.Cole, Drake, Wiz, Big Sean, Flyboy and I, that will easily be a line of the past.” Rocky has continued to progress with his music by teaming up with singer and songwriter/producer Chrishan to release his newest single, “Wassup Love,” through Hit Republic Music. “Wassup Love” has already received nearly 38,000 views with fans continuing to download the hit.
So get a hold of Rocky’s music now before he blows up because with talent like this, you’re bound to. Only time will tell. Keep doing your thing, Rocky because not only are you representing yourself, but you’re representing Minnesota as well.
